hi everybody..... this is sethu and am totally new to SQL. am trying to study sql myself and work out.... so i tried installing oracle sql developer in my laptop and i have problem in setting up a new connection..... i don't have any idea about which server am suppose to connect or whats the host no.: i entered the following:

connection name:sethu
username:sethu
password:sethu
connection type:basic and role:default
hostname:localhost
port:1521
SID:xe
and when i give test...

the error shown is "status:failure-test failure: IO Error: The Network could not establish the connection". what am i suppose to do for this....hoping for a solution soon... pls...

So you cannot connect.
Go to OTN and download Oracle XE.

I advise you to watch Stephane Faroult's YouTube videos named "Oracle DBA Lite: an introduction to Oracle" (parts 1 to 7); they are based on Oracle XE.

SQL depends upon some RDBMS & MYSQL is easier to install & manage than Oracle.
