newbie (relatively) - XML Compressor and XQuery doubt

I am quite new to the world of XML and XQuery. I have managed to generate XML file (huge ones for that matter) through DOM - using some funny mechanism of reading in XML formats and parsing raw data and clubbing them.

Now, the problem is that i need to have a querying mechanism in place for this..... and the files are huge (in terms of hundreds of MBs!!) and i was was looking for a compression tool that would support querying AND be freeware at the same time. anybody knows anything on those lines?

also, i needed some good basic tutorials [not the usual w3schools and w3c things please - i have already been through these without much help ..... :( ]. could anybody help this poor soul out?
