The definition recently posted for the term "organisational intelligence" (ie: as applied to computer systems = Sum of the data + Sum of the code) did not appear to be well received. One understandable reason is the already abundant supply of buzzwords in the DBMS related fields.

What is the opinion of the term "business intelligence"? What precisely is "business intelligence".

If we do a google for the term and additionally the appearance of the term "RDBMS" we get about 55,000 items: http://www.google.com.au/search?as_q=&num=100&hl=en&btnG=Google+Search&as_epq=business+intelligence&as_oq=rdbms&as_eq=&lr=&as_ft=i&as_filetype=&as_qdr=all&as_occt=any&as_dt=i&as_sitesearch=&safe=images

There are obviously people who can define the elements of business intelligence in some manner or form, the point is whether there is any semblance of consensus of opinion amidst them. Is it just buzz-like-ascii? What is your opinion?

IMO business intelligence is reflected in the sophistication of the automation of the database and application and all related processes in the environment. We talk about business rules, but it is in the implementation of these rules that the level of business intelligence is incrementally raised.

We talk about a computer system and database, but if a business is terribly bound to manual procedures and has poor investment in automated systems, then the level of business intelligence at that site is lower than at another site which have workflow processes in place, that assist to admin the business rules, etc, heavily assisted by automation.

Does this make sense?

Now, if we return to the term "organisational intelligence", does the above make the term any clearer? A business is just one form of an organisation.
