NIST started research in this and in ad-hoc mobile networks years ago, but from a networking perspective. I'm sure it wasn't only NIST, but I used their resources for an acadmic paper on mobile routing protocols.

It is interesting that the topic has migrated into the SIGMOD and IEEE Data Engineering domains.

You know academics. Just add a little bit to what someone else has already put out and you have a paper.
