Indeed, well expressed.

Date and Darven cover the problems of such fundamental mistake in chapter 2 of TTM (page 22).

So what is problematic?

It's well known that the DBMSs that tried to treat relational variables as types were a fiasco. The problems derived from such fundamental mistake helped a lot.
