Agreed! But note that there is an optimization possible there: multiple checkouts with merge. This distinctly mitigates the problem of wait-for-checkin, but maintains all of the value of source control. It may be that someone bitching about "source control sucks because I have to wait all the time" was the motivation for the development of this feature. :-)

I find I'm generally not so good at noticing the downside of things I like; an outsider is often better at it.
