This process seems pretty much like the 'biology keys' you learn in preschool, or those game books (turn to page77 if you win the fight).

Basically you should only ask the right questions for the previous answer.

It sounds like in his previous attempts he simply asked the questions in the wrong order?

Unless you are suggesting that the data set is limited such that after asking if its a yellow beak you happen only get a red eye dataset. But to know its a redeye data set means you must look for the redeyes anyway, thus you cant benefit from that here.
