I'm afraid I won't be able to educate you very much about hierarchical databases. The first database I worked with was self styled relational. Perhaps some other participants can be more helpful in this regard.

What I'm trying to understand is the difference between an OODB and a hierarchical database. From the questions you asked, I'm gathering that it has more to do with an interface to an object oriented programming language than with any fundamental difference in the way data is structured while it is in storage.
