DBMS in Java

For a project next year, I hope to write a simple, yet powerful Database manager in java. I intented to write my own Indexing and storage algorithms for this DB.

Just wondering for any warnings, hints, gotta's etc that anybody can think of, is it possible in java, or will the IO API soon start to let me down? Also, does any one know of any good web sites that may be of interest to me for this task?
