time series

where do i find good hints about howto handle time series in relational databases efficiently? the series i've got to store contain up to 40 000 points, average may be 9 000. about 80% of operations on them will be reading or writing the complete series but queries on statistic values (e.g. average value) are needed too.
some introducing literature would be fine ...
