My teaching experience is that students have trouble with 1NF -- they don't understand what a scalar value is and keep overloading their columsn with lists, bit vectors, combination codes, etc.

If you can get a copy of the old DATABASE PROGRAMMING & DESIGN magazine normalization poster, I would put it on the classroom wall to help the students to understand the development of the normal forms. Received on Wed Nov 14 2001 - 00:44:08 CET
