"Why" is always a hard question.

I think it's something like, "If the only tool you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail." People learn a tool, then (mis)use it for everything.

It's just a bunch of different cultures. Some people are code hackers, that's mostly OO today. Some people are database types, that's mostly relational today. Some do networking. Others do operating systems. Some do business logic for applications. Others do GUI.

How many people do you know, who are good at any two or more of these areas? Most people I know are only good at one, and seem to have zero or negative interest in branching out.
