I gave up following developments in Temporal DB research years ago 'coz it never seems to deliver anything.

In the meantime, be sure to let 4th Normal Form be your friend. Since its applicability is to *exactly* the sort of problem you describe, it's too bad there are so many folk out there spouting the erroneous "conventional wisdom" that 3NF as the highest "useful" Normal Form.
