This term is usually used in the context of semistructured data and/or heterogeneous data where the user should be able to ask queries without precisely knowing what the schema is. You could think of, for example, a query that consists of only some keywords or a question in some natural language. Based upon that and the actual database schema, the database can more or less deduce what the exact query should be.
