I recently asked a related question on this newsgroup. One reply pointed to a recent book called: "Developing time-oriented database applications", Richard Snodgrass, 2000, 501 p., ISBN 1-55860-436-7.

I recommend this book. It has detailed discussions of the various ways time can be implemented with code fragments for the major SQL RDBMS'.
