i recommend looking at the example databases at www.dbwatch.com: ny stock exchange data (~2m records) and tpcd (~1m). the db server is running on a desktop somewhere on the left coast. kdb, from kx systems (www.kx.com) is a joinless relational system with order. i believe that the lehman bros kdb installation requires subsecond response to queries on 50 million record tables.
