See if you can find a copy of "Data Modeling Essentials: Analysis, Design, and Innovation" by Graeme C. Simsion, International Thomson Computer Press, 1994, ISBN 1-850-32877-3.
Comprehensive, practical, unpretentious guidance for a data modeler starting out.
