oracle documentation on dataguard needs improvement, but of course you'll never hear that from the oracle marketing folks. A few recommendations that I have :
- If you want to used the GUI, then take the dataguard class offered by oracle. Without the class you are dead in the water.
- Use Oracle 9.2 version.
- If you want to use the GUI, a few things the manual doesn't tell you : The preferred credentials include operating system software owner of $ORACLE_HOME. Generally a big time problem if you've got Info Security that requires no one knows the oracle password.
- Command line (DGMGRL ) is an option, but it is cumbersome.
- Try the SQL commands. This approach worked best for us so far.
- Use asymmetrical config files for primary - standby if you are
using physical. It's in metalink.
