oracle documentation on dataguard needs improvement, but of course you'll never hear that from the oracle marketing folks. A few recommendations that I have :

  1. If you want to used the GUI, then take the dataguard class offered by oracle. Without the class you are dead in the water.
  2. Use Oracle 9.2 version.
  3. If you want to use the GUI, a few things the manual doesn't tell you : The preferred credentials include operating system software owner of $ORACLE_HOME. Generally a big time problem if you've got Info Security that requires no one knows the oracle password.
  4. Command line (DGMGRL ) is an option, but it is cumbersome.
  5. Try the SQL commands. This approach worked best for us so far.
  6. Use asymmetrical config files for primary - standby if you are using physical. It's in metalink.
