Go to www.google.com, select groups, search in comp.databases.oracle* for the exact phrase history of oracle . oracle also has an official history http://www.oracle.com/corporate/index.html?story.html . The book "The difference between Larry Ellison and God" is pretty informative, too.

In 1990 there was unify, sybase (which became ms-sql), ingres, db2, rdb and a bunch of others. There were also many non-relational competitors.

Please post your project (on comp.databases.oracle.misc) when done.
