creating tablespaces for performance

Hi,
I'm using Oracle 8i on Win2k. I've a large database which comprises of
two main data tables containing around 400,000 records and 40 master
tables!
As expected, now I'm facing performance issues.
Somebody told me that one way to improve performance is to put the
large tables and master tables in two different tablespaces but was
unable to come up with sufficient supporting arguments.
Can anyone guide me in this direction?
