Archive Log

Hello,

Is there any way for an application to generate Archive Log Files on the server. I have Oracle 8.0.6 server running on the Sun OS and I am getting a lots of Archive log files... its like one every 4-5 Minutes. Is there something wrong in what I am doing? I am totally confused because I always thought an application could not instruct server explicitly to generate archive log.
Please let me know...
