Autocommit via JDBC

I am trying to send the command 'Set Autocommit Off' through JDBC. It returns the error :

Exception:ORA-00922: missing or invalid option

This command however works through SQL +. Does anybody have any thoughts on what string I should send through JDBC to turn autocommit off ?

I use oracle version 8.1.7.0.0
