Is 'IPC Automatic' possible in 'Net8' ?

I have read on METALINK that the parameter AUTOMATIC_IPC which was so wonderfull in SQL*Net has been invalidated in Net8. Is there a method to make the same now or are we obligated to force a TNSNAMES entry with IPC protocol to be used by server processes which want to connect to a local database ?
