You need only to shutdown the database if you want to make a "cold" backup. If you are running archivelog mode al your logfile will be archived. You can make an online backup of the database in this mode. Furthermore, it not necessary to bring down the database. With proper tuning skills you can let your database perform very well without shutting down.
