Connecting to remote Oracle with 3rd party clients

Sorry if this is double posted, it didn't seem to go through the first time.
We're trying to use a third party client to connect to a remote oracle database. we've tried multiple clients to connect all of which use libclntsh.so, but all fail to authenticate. However using the same auth info with sqlplus works fine.
We've seen other people experiencing similar problems, for example, there were a few posts on the PHP mailing list, but they received no answers.
Evironment Info:
Solaris 8 sparc
Oracle 8i 8.1.5,8.1.7
