date question

I am new to Oracle's implementation of SQL, and I have a very basic question regarding the "date" data type.
The documentation indicates that Oracle stores the century down to the second for a date, but suppose I only care about the current month and day. How can I adjust either the way the data is stored or retrieved from the column?
