Question on startup Oracle in NT

Hi,

Newbie to Oracle in NT. What does startup of oracle services mean? I thought starting up oracle services will start up oracle instance. But when I did that (start the services)and went to svrmgr23 to check, it showed the database is down. I've to issue "startup" in svrmgr23, then it startup database. I went to check the alert log, it showed the databaes were started twice. This is confusing. Can someone enhighten me on this?
