Oracle 8i Client Connectivity

I have installed Oracle 8i on an NT Server and Oracle 8i client on a Win95 machine. The Net8 configuration on the client seems to be correct but the following error occurs during connection via SQL Plus: 'ORA-12638 Credential Retrieval Failed'.
