ORA-12705 invalid or unknown NLS parameter

After an unfortunate attempt recently to install servicepack 4 for NT my machine crashed, and cost me a few days of recovery work. Thanks Bill. As I needed at least servicepack 4 for other reasons, I chose to go directly to servicepack 5. After this I installed the oracle client software anew, set up the services and tried to connect. And the following problem is encountered for all native oracle applications tryding to connect.

ORA-12705 invalid or unknown NLS parameter value specified.

TNSping80 to the same ip-address works fine, and all applications work on another computer that runs servicepack 4.

This is driving me crazy, please help me...
