Personal Oracle v8 install problems

Hi all!
I'm running win98 on a Compaq Presario with 128Mb of memory, etc... There is no previous installation of any Oracle products on the box. (I got the box about a month ago.)
After downloading a hefty 180 Mb I tried to install the current version of Personal Oracle version 8. It didn't get far though. I choosed to install the Application Developer installation in c:\orawin95 and set the path to the corresponding \bin directory. After that the installer started to analyze dependencies. When it came to "Oracle 8 ODBC Driver" it stopped. I noticed a new minimized program called "DATECHKW" which was some kind of error message saying "Error opening C:\My, C:\My was not found" I clicked the OK(?) button and another message came up saying "odbo 3221.vrf(421): Unbound environment variable 'ModResult' "
Is it something that I should have done before installing, or is it an "undocumented feature", i.e. bug...
