What version of Oracle are you running? If it 7.2.3 or higher you should be able to Oracle's EBU or R-MAN utilities to provide a hot back up. There are many software packages out there that plug into EBU or R-MAN to create an automated back up.

BEWARE all software that does "hot" or cold backups is not created the same. Some use multiple streams (the number of streams vary greatly with different products), some use OP cards, some write to disk before they write to tape, some write to shared memmory, some have a very low CPU overhead, MOST have a very high CPU overhead, many products write the information very differntly to tape- which can create very different recovery options.
