database link problem in 7.1.6

We created a brand new database in 7.1.6 and created a link to a remote database. When I enter a select statement using the database link I get the message:
ORA-02085: database link PROD.WORLD connects to CHANGE_ON_INSTALL.WORLD
A select statement to other remote databases returns the same error. I am able to do a connect to the remote database though.
Any ideas?
