I am somewhat of a newbie but I have had this problem and resolved it. I am writing this from memory so there may be some minor mistakes in my solution, but you should get the drift. I have this problem when I start the second instance with Database Manager. The way I can start the instance successfully is to start (or stop and start if already started) the Windows NT start{SID} service. As you can tell we are running on NT. It appears that you can also do the same thing by setting the proper SID and then using the command line version of instance manager with the proper parameters to start up an instance.

Another symptom I noticed was if I only start the second instance using Database Manager and the other instance is down it appears to come up okay. But if you query V$DATABASE you will see the database for the original instance. It appears that Data Manager has no way to reset the SID for the second instance and therefore tries to start the database for the first instance created. Received on Tue Sep 17 1996 - 00:00:00 CEST
