dbms_sql.execute errors

Anybody using dbms_sql successfully?
I'm getting some really bizarre errors when
I get to the .execute(cursor) statements.
Things like = sign unexpected when that's
what goes there. took it out of the book,
checked it against the package documentation
and the TANJed thing still won't compile.
Take out the exec and it compiles (lot of
good that does). And oracle distributed
the package body in byte-codes, so i can't
see what's really going on.
