Oracle Forms DDE to ArcView

I am trying to use DDE linking from Forms 4.5 (client) and ArcView 3.0 (server). I can initiate a conversation (DDE.INITIATE) with ArcView. However, when I try to request data (DDE.REQUEST) from an Avenue script the script executes but I do not get a return value. In fact, I get a user-defined exception (ORA-106551) without the exception handler (WHEN OTHERS) being invoked. Consequently, I am led to believe that the conversation type supported by ArcView (manual) is not supported by Forms.

If anyone out there has had experience in this please let me know.
