The Oracle SID is usually assigned to a variable (i.e. environment varibale in unix ORACLE_SID). Its location is OS specific. In a unix environment you would simply echo the variable to return the value. If you issue the ENV command in unix It will also display its value and the value of other assigned variables. Your question is interesting and one of the aswers is too. you can't select from the database without loging on hence how can you logon without the ORACLE_SID?
