Hello,

We are implementing a system running on Oracle 7.1.3 RDBMS on Windows NT 3.51, using Oracle Forms 4.0 and stored functions/procedures. The system consists of some 100 modules (forms), 5-10 batches (written in C/Pro*C), approx. 40 reports (Oracle Reports 2.5) and close to 300 stored objects (packages, procedures, functions).

The Oracle server is the workgroup server version.

We are now investigating the possibility of migrating from 7.1.3 to 7.2 or (preferably) 7.3, and are looking for world-wide experiences with migration between these versions. Since the 7.3 workgroup server has not yet been released, we would assume that any migration to 7.3 would be done with the enterprise server, but are of course still interested in hearing of your experiences.

Specifically we are interested in information related to the following areas:

  • Stability of Oracle 7.2 and 7.3, e.g, which patch level should be considered as the migration startpoint.
  • Updating the DB server, e.g., s/w load times, setup and tuning. Time taken, problems encountered, etc.
  • 'Upgrading'/recompiling your application/system, e.g., did you have to recode parts of the system, or could you run the existing modules immediately. If you have any batches (C/Pro*C modules) in the application, is it enough to recompile those with the new 7.x libraries, etc.
  • Testing. After the migration, did you perform a full system test, just using the application somewhat, just verifying that the most common functions worked, etc. Any problems encountered, and so on.
  • Preparations, changes to the architecture, how much do you need to understand (initially) of the internals of 7.x, and so on...
  • Other experiences that you feel could be benefitial to be aware of during the migration process.

Also, if anybody has any pointers to information related to the stability
of these versions (test-documents, articles, etc.), we would appreciate a "signpost".

Thanks in advance,

/Leif Klepp
