Forms 4.5 reading data from a serial Port

I am working on a project which requires that a Forms 4.5 application respond to data from a device connected to a serial port. I can think of several possible ways to handle this and was wondering if anyone had experince with this type of interface and could point in direction of a clean effective solution.
