Oracle Gateway To Sybase 4.9

We are using a gateway in Oracle to connect to a Sybase 4.9 Database. I believe that it uses a Visigenic ODBC Driver. When trying to retrieve data, we keep getting a TIMEOUT Message.
Any ideas as to what is cauing it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
