Whereas, of course, people never accidentally remove files from a UNIX file system.... Provided your sys admin is 'fit for purpose' then I don't see that files are any more or less likely to be trashed than raw devices. Of course, it helps if your OS has some form of LVM so that you can give 'raw devices' meaningful names.
