default date format change in Oracle 7.1.4 on HP-UX 9.04

Hi all,
We have set NLS format for the date YYYYMMDD HH24:MI:SS in the initora file. But during runtime, sometimes sysdate retrieves date in the format DD-MON-YY from the PRO*C program. Can someone tell us why this is happening and the possible solutions?
