ALTER allows you to add columns to the end of the table. Yep, its pretty helpful.

Look at MetaMANAGE from BMC Software. MetaMANAGE allows to to change any attribute of any object. MetaMANAGE creates a script to unload/drop/recreate/reload/recompile/regrant. Check it out.
