Connecting through COBOL

I have an application which is written in COBOL and accesses and Oracle database via SQL*net. My problem occurs when the program does not successfully connect to the database. The program just "hangs." I get no error messages back. I am using PRO*COBOL 1.6. Does anybody have any suggestions?
