Actually, if you are running Reports 2.5 on a PC platform you can simply install a barcode font (3 of 9 etc.) and treat the field just like any other field by selecting the barcode font....

I did just that using Reports 2.5 and found a freebee font on the net. Just do a search for "barcode font".
