connector string??

Hi,
I am trying to do client/server installation. I am getting
the following error. I am wondering if my connect string is wrong.
Here is my listeneres.ora file, this works fine.
LISTENER=
(ADDRESS_LIST=
(ADDRESS=
(PROTOCOL=IPC)
(KEY=rat)
)
)
STARTUP_WAIT_TIME_LISTENER = 0
CONNECT_TIMEOUT_LISTENER = 10

Please let me know what the connect string should be.
The alias I set up in tnsnames.ora is ora. I tried as
gade/xxxxxx_at_ora. This gives the error message as
ERROR: ORA-12154
Any help is appreciated.
