Very interesting! Have you ever thought of the number of hits to the database with the above scenario in addition to those done by applications and what it will do to your system's performance?

You might be better of giving direct access to the original database and spread the tables, indexes, etc across different disks to increase performance. If security is the issue, you can control it through roles and views. This would be much simpler than and achieve the same purpose as making sure your snapshots are updated every few seconds <shudder>.

PS: if you still insist on updating snapshots every few seconds, make sure

    you have extremely fast machines with extremely fast disks and very     wide bandwidth to push those data through.
