You've very accurately stated the current pros and cons.
SGI has finally decided to hire a workforce, maybe that will translate into full respectability within the next couple of years.
DON'T USE RAID5 AS YOUR ONLY SYSTEM STORAGE! Some RAID5 might be useful, but their are much better performance/availability strategies.
