Storing/Retrieving BMP bitmaps using VB and Oracle

I have an application in which I wuould like to be able to retrieve BMP bitmaps from an Oracle 7.0 table. It appears that the Oracle LONG datatype is able to hold the bit map but I'm at a loss as to how to insert the bitmaps and how to retreive the bitmaps in my VB app.

Has anyone done this or have any ideas about how to accomplish this?
