I wrote an article for Select and one section touch on the Oracle listserver. Below is an excerpt of the article.

List Servers

List Servers are basically a mailing list for a specific interest group and one exists for the Oracle community called the Oracle-L listserver. If you post an email to this list, it would be sent to all those that have subscribed to be on the mailing list which as of February 1995 stands at over 1,100 recipients. This means that you will also receive all postings to this mailing list. For the month of February 1995, there is an average of 10-25 postings a day. It is also possible to receive all the posting in a day as one single email. This is know as a digest (refer below).

To subscribe to the Oracle-L listserver, send an email to LISTSERV_at_CCVM.SUNYSB.EDU and in the body type "subscribe oracle-l Your_Name".

    mail LISTSERV_at_CCVM.SUNYSB.EDU
    SUBSCRIBE ORACLE-L Your_Name
Subscribing to Oracle-L Listserver

The same is required to unsubscribe from the list.

    mail LISTSERV_at_CCVM.SUNYSB.EDU
    SIGNOFF ORACLE-L Your_Name
Un-subscribing from Oracle-L Listserver

Requesting for help

Be warned that you may receive quite a number of emails from this listserver that may not be of interest to you. You have two options here. The first is to request for a digest only.

    mail LISTSERV_at_CCVM.SUNYSB.EDU
    SET ORACLE-L DIGEST
Subscribing in digest form

The second is to get an index or digest of the posting and then request for the digest. This is because all the postings to this list are archived. First get a listing of the archive.

    mail LISTSERV_at_CCVM.SUNYSB.EDU
    INDEX ORACLE-L On examining the reply from the listserver, request the archive required.

    mail LISTSERV_at_CCVM.SUNYSB.EDU
    GET ORACLE-L LOGxxxx

To post to a query to the Oracle-L list, send an email to ORACLEL _at_CCVM.SUNYSB.EDU and type your request in the body of the email. Subject lines are ignored.
