OCI remote login failure with Oracle 7.1.4

Has anyone else experienced difficulty using OCI with 7.1.4 on a risc/6000.
Whenever I attempt to access a remote database (i.e. user/password_at_remote), the OCI login script stops executing and returns "Illegal Instruction" as the only error message. This happens with code that worked vs 7.0.15 oracle. The problem even occurs with oracle's own cdemo1.c, cdemo2.c stuff in $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/demo.
Any suggestions. (Support is not responding)
